Thank you for visiting The Elephant’s Trunk website and for contributing your gently used household items to our consignment shop.  Donations, such as yours, are vital in keeping The Elephant’s Trunk a viable organization and sustaining our fundraising commitment to PPNEP.


Every item you drop off at The Elephant’s Trunk is valuable to us and a portion (or all!) of the value of each item is considered a contribution since all proceeds benefit Planned Parenthood of North East Pennsylvania (PPNEP), a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization.  There are a number of ways your contribution of household items may count as a donation to PPNEP:


  • Consigned items sold at estimated selling price: If the item sells at the original estimated price, 50% of the selling price is considered a donation.

  • Consigned items sold at reduced prices: Items kept longer than 4 weeks are reduced in price. The contribution amount is considered to be 50% of the final selling price, if sold before the consignment expiration date.

  • Items retained after the consignment expiration date: Items left at The Elephant’s Trunk after the expiration date are considered to be the property of The Elephant’s Trunk and are considered a contribution.  However, the amount of the contribution is determined by the final sales price, which will likely be much less than the estimated price.

  • Items valued at less than $8.00 and sold in our bargain basement: Any item dropped off and valued at less than $8.00 will be sold in the basement. No commission is paid, therefore the entire amount is a donation.  The donated value is the amount equal to the final sales price.

  • Items dropped off as a donation, no matter what the value: Please ask for a receipt, which will describe the items you are donating and provide us with your name and address.  You are responsible for determining the value of the donated items. Remember, the value of used household items are much less than when purchased new.



    • Please be aware that the value of used property is generally much less than the price paid when new.  The donor is responsible for determining the fair market value.  Keep your documentation and consult your tax advisor for additional information.


    The Elephant’s Trunk is an all-volunteer operation and is run on a shoestring budget so that the greatest amount of profit can be passed on to PPNEP for the fulfillment of its mission to serve families in the Lehigh Valley and throughout its nine-county region. We will gladly accept these items as a contribution to help run our shop:

    • Postage stamps

    • Scotch tape refills

    • Post-its and general consumable office supplies

    • Copier paper
